7 Signs of a Spiritual Awakening

If you are going through a spiritual awakening, it can feel a little disorienting. It might feel like one of those movies where the person wakes up in another life. Everything looks the same — it’s the same house, same dog, same job — but somehow, things don’t quite feel the same. It all feels a little off. Something isn’t right but you can’t quite put your finger on what it is.

That is the thing about a spiritual awakening: you wake up right in the middle of it all with no warning.

Your life may not have changed, but you have, and suddenly you’re looking at everything through a slightly different lens. Here's the best way I can describe it: When I went through the earthquake in San Francisco I lived in Palo Alto, near Stanford, and when the building inspector came to inspect our building a week later, the whole thing had moved 2 inches off its foundation. That is a perfect analogy for what life feels like during a spiritual awakening, one giant building, fully intact, moved two inches to the left.

Where a timeline shift often has some accompanying physical sensations, a spiritual awakening tends to feel more emotional. There can certainly be crossover between the two, but with a spiritual awakening, the overriding feeling is often that things just don’t feel the same anymore — along with the unsettling realization that they may never feel quite the same again. And you have no reason why, nothing happened, you just woke up one day and so much of life now feels wrong or different.

And that prospect can be daunting, especially when you don’t want to throw away everything you’ve built in your life. And the truth is a lot of it is actually pretty good. You don’t want to start over and you don’t have any idea how you would anyway, or what you would do.

The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to. A spiritual awakening isn’t always about leaving your job, ending your relationship, moving across the country, or becoming an entirely different person. If your life isn't aligned with who you truly are, the awakening may be calling you to adjust that. But sometimes it is simply about beginning to see yourself, your life, and what matters to you differently.

1. Things you used to care about suddenly don’t feel as important.

Goals, achievements, possessions, approval, being busy, even certain social things may lose some of their pull. You’re not necessarily unmotivated; you just genuinely don’t care about some of the things you used to care about. Whereas in the past you might have been excited about the party at the club, or the first one to sign up or offer to bring something to a gathering, now you find yourself trying to think of an excuse not to go.

2. You start questioning parts of your life that you never questioned before.

Your work, relationships, where you live, how you spend your time, even beliefs you’ve held for years. Nothing necessarily happened to make you question them. You just suddenly find yourself asking, Is this still right for me? I just had a client say to me that she thinks maybe she should take a leave of absence — from her own medical practice! Nothing happened. Nothing is wrong. She just doesn’t feel as engaged as she once did, and naturally she is wondering if this is burnout.

3. You feel less comfortable around certain people — even people you love.

Conversations or relationships that once felt perfectly acceptable can suddenly feel draining, superficial, negative, or simply out of sync with you. This can be one of the more unsettling parts because the other person may not have changed at all. Maybe you have that one friend who always gossiped a bit or put others down yet you could look the other way about that part of her. Now you can no longer ignore it and you find yourself wanting to avoid her completely.

4. You have a stronger need for space and time alone.

Not because you want to isolate yourself, but because you need room to hear yourself think and feel. Constant noise, plans, conversation, social media, or other people’s opinions can suddenly feel like too much. So you find yourself spending more time alone, or with your pets, sitting quietly inside or outside, and you actually feel calm and content doing it. You may even wonder why you suddenly want so much time to yourself. Generally speaking, you might be a social person, but not right now — being around people could feel like the last thing you want to do.

5. Your intuition gets harder to ignore.

You may start knowing things before you have a logical reason to know them, feeling very clear yeses and nos, thinking about someone just before they contact you, having more meaningful dreams, seeing signs everywhere, or noticing that your first instinct is right more often than you realized. And this inner knowing, or voice, is louder than ever.

This is one of the clearest signs that you are moving toward living more aligned. Your intuition is louder because it doesn’t want you spending your time on the wrong path, person, or thing anymore, knowing you’ll only end up right back where you started.

6. You become much more aware of what doesn’t feel authentic.

This could be in yourself as much as in other people. You notice when you’re saying yes but mean no, pretending something doesn’t bother you, trying to keep someone happy, or living according to what you think you should want. It is also harder to pretend you are happy if you are not, or ignore when someone is making subtle put-downs but acting like it’s all in fun. Or doing something else that doesn’t line up with your values and never truly did.

And you can no longer pretend not to see something — like when someone is angry or sad, even when they aren’t saying anything about it. Things you used to tolerate become much harder to tolerate.

7. You know something needs to change, but you don’t necessarily know what.

I think this is the big one. There can be a strange in-between period where the old version of your life doesn’t quite fit anymore, but you have no idea what the new version is supposed to look like.

And that is the hardest part.

It can start to create an underlying anxiety or undertow as you quietly panic because you have no idea what’s wrong, what’s next, or what to do. Feeling somewhat numb or like you are on autopilot when everyone around you thinks you’re fine can be scary too. You wonder how long you can pretend everything is okay when you aren’t even sure that it is.

So What Do You Do When You're in the Middle of It?

Everything can feel like it's constricting or getting smaller right now. But that's usually the sign right before an expansion — because that's usually what happens after the awakening — life expands.

Here's what I tell my clients when they're in the thick of a spiritual awakening and don't know what to do with it.

Don't blow up your life over a feeling.

A spiritual awakening can make everything you've built feel suddenly foreign, and that can create a powerful urge to escape it — quit the job, end the relationship, move across the country, start over completely. Sometimes real change is exactly what's needed. But big, permanent decisions made from a place of disorientation tend to just recreate the same discomfort somewhere new. Give the feeling room before you give it a decision.

Not every uncomfortable feeling means something has to end.

Discomfort isn't always a verdict. Sometimes it's just information — a sign that something needs adjusting, not abandoning. The friend who's started to grate on you, maybe it is time to let that one go, but the job that feels different lately, the routine that no longer fits — these might need a conversation, a boundary, or a shift in how you show up, not necessarily an exit. Sometimes a reframe is all you need.

Give yourself time.

You don't have to figure out what any of this means right away. One of the hardest parts of an awakening is the pressure to have an answer — especially for those that tend to make things happen in life. We want answers: what’s changing, what's next, and what are you supposed to do about it? You don't need the answer yet. You're allowed to sit in the not-knowing for a while. If we force answers because it feels uncomfortable not to know, we tend to regret it later.

Pay attention to what keeps coming up.

If the same thought, feeling, or realization keeps returning no matter how many times you try to brush it aside, that's worth taking seriously. It's not random, it’s information. Whatever keeps resurfacing is usually pointing you toward what actually needs your attention.

Start with small changes, not enormous ones.

You don't have to reinvent your whole life to honor what you're feeling. Maybe it's saying no to one thing you'd normally say yes to. Maybe it's spending Sunday morning alone instead of at brunch and not feeling guilty about it. Maybe it's finally naming the thing you've been pretending not to notice. Small, honest adjustments add up — and they're a lot less terrifying than trying to overhaul everything at once.

Some moments may feel like you’re playing pin the tail on the donkey, you’re blindfolded and grasping for a direction. But if you let that awkwardness be ok for a while the right answers will come.

A spiritual awakening isn't a problem to solve. It's a process to move through — and you're allowed to move through it slowly.
