Signs from the Universe: How to Know What a Sign Means
Something Is Trying to Get Your Attention
Have you ever seen something — an animal crossing your path, a repeating number, a strange little coincidence — and felt that quiet inner nudge that says, does this means something?
When we open ourselves to intuition, the world around you starts speaking in ways you never noticed before. Signs show up in all kinds of forms. An animal crossing your path. A number that keeps appearing. A moment so perfectly timed it stops you in your tracks.
And once you start noticing them, the question that naturally follows is: what is this trying to tell me? How do I know if something is truly a sign from the universe? What does a sign from the universe mean? These are questions I've spent decades helping people answer.
I'm Janet Rae Orth, intuitive, spiritual coach, and energy healer. For 30 years I've helped people decode the messages the universe sends when we need them most. Signs have been some of my greatest teachers along the way, and in this guide I'll share exactly how to interpret the ones showing up in your life.
Signs from the universe, can offer comfort, a subtle reassurance that you are not alone. They can be spirit saying hello. They can redirect us, nudging us away from a path that isn't right. They can be confirmation that what you are already doing is exactly right, keep going. And sometimes they arrive as pure guidance, pointing toward something you need to consider, or what the outcome may be — which often gives us hope to carry on.
Common Signs from the Universe
Signs often appear in simple, everyday ways. An animal may cross your path at a moment that feels strangely meaningful. You might begin noticing repeating numbers showing up everywhere — 111, 222, 444 — at just the right moment. Sometimes small objects appear, it might be a feather on the ground, or a coin in an unexpected place. And sometimes it's synchronicity itself, a series of events lining up so perfectly it feels impossible to dismiss.
While each of these symbols carries its own traditional associations, the real meaning of a sign always comes from the moment in which it appears.
How to Know If Something Is a Sign
Not everything is a sign. The robin on your lawn every morning is probably just a robin. But every now and then, something happens that simply doesn't fit. An animal appears somewhere it shouldn't be. A bird does something that catches your attention in a way you can't quite explain. The same number shows up three times before noon. Something breaks — twice — in a way that feels oddly pointed.
Those are the moments worth pausing for.
A nocturnal animal appearing in broad daylight is breaking its own nature. A bird tapping persistently on your window isn't lost — it's insistent. When something interrupts the ordinary flow of life in a way that makes you look up, that's often the first signal. The unusualness itself is trying to get your attention.
Start With the Animal Itself
If an animal has caught your attention and you sense it could be a message, the place to begin is with the animal itself — how it actually lives, what it does, what it is known for in the natural world. That's where the meaning lives.
A condor has one of the longest lifespans of any bird on earth, so it is naturally associated with longevity and resilience. A ladybug spends it’s life eating the very insects that destroy gardens, which is why its arrival has long been considered a sign of good fortune and protection. A crane symbolizes patience and resilience — they stand perfectly still in water for long stretches of time, waiting for exactly the right moment. And a cardinal never migrates — it stays, year after year, in the same place, always present, always nearby. Which is why so many spiritual traditions believe that seeing one is a hello from a departed loved one. They are still with you, just as the cardinal is always with us.
The meaning isn't invented. It's drawn from who the animal actually is.
Why Signs Appear When They Do
The sign almost never arrives to tell you something you already know about yourself.
A crane doesn't appear to say — you are so patient, good job. It arrives when patience is what the moment is asking of you. It might be telling you that what you are doing is going to take more time, and to stay with it. When the crane waits, it eventually gets dinner. The sign points toward what's needed, and in doing so it can offer hope and comfort — a reason to stay the course and carry on.
Coyotes are often referred to as nature's ventriloquists. Their yelps bounce off hills and trees in a way that makes it nearly impossible for prey to locate where the sound is coming from. Because of this they are associated with trickster energy — with misdirection and illusion. Seeing a coyote in an unusual way, such as during daylight or behaving out of character, might be a sign to be on guard, that something around you may not be what it seems.
But coyotes are also deeply associated with intelligence and adaptability — they live in every environment, desert, forest, mountains, even cities. So in another moment, a coyote sighting might carry a completely different message: look for new solutions, adjust your approach, find another way forward.
This is why looking at your own life is always the final step. The nature of the symbol points you in a direction. What's happening in your life tells you which direction applies.
Repeating numbers work in a similar way. Many people notice sequences like 111, 222, or 444 appearing again and again — on clocks, receipts, addresses, or license plates. These are often referred to as angel numbers, and each sequence is commonly associated with certain themes, such as alignment, reassurance, or encouragement to pay attention. But even with repeating numbers, the meaning becomes clear only when you look at what was happening in your life when they appeared. The number may highlight a moment, confirm a decision, or draw your attention to something you were already sensing but hadn’t fully acknowledged.
A note on using AI: We all use it, and it can be helpful in many situations. While AI can offer general symbolism, the real meaning of a sign is rarely universal. The message depends on your life, your timing, and what was happening around you when it appeared. Sally's experience is a good example of this. My client Sally asked AI about her sign and it generated a full page of psychological interpretation for the sign, and while it was thorough, it was difficult to apply. None of it related to what she was actually going through. It gave her no insight into her situation or what the message for her meant. What was missing was any knowledge of her life.
How Your Life Reveals the Meaning of a Sign
Once you have a sense of what the symbol carries, hold it up against what is actually happening in your life right now. What are you navigating? What question has been sitting quietly in the back of your mind? What decision keeps coming back to you?
The meaning lives at the intersection of the symbol's nature and your current reality.
My client Sally was wrestling with a decision about a friendship that had slowly become toxic. She valued the years they had shared, the history, the continuity. She couldn't decide whether to keep it, step back quietly, or end it completely. Then she broke a glass. The next day she broke an identical glass. She hadn't broken anything in years. She knew it was a sign but had no idea what it meant, and she came to me genuinely baffled.
When I held that symbol against what she was going through, it was immediately clear. Break it off. The sign gave her the clarity she needed — and the reassurance that ending a long friendship was the right path. Signs can guide us toward what we already know but are reluctant to accept. Sometimes that's all a sign is — life showing you what you already sense, in a way you can't ignore.
What It Means When Signs Repeat
Sometimes the universe doesn't whisper — it repeats itself until you finally feel it.
A friend of mine was going through a hard stretch — aging parents, work struggles, teenagers growing up faster than felt comfortable. That particular kind of quiet overwhelm that builds when too many things feel uncertain at once. Within a single week, she saw a horseshoe hung above a door. Someone handed her a rabbit's foot keychain. A car with the license plate LUCKY pulled out in front of her. And at a baseball game, she met a pet ferret named Lucky.
One of those moments you might dismiss. Two might make you smile. But four, in the span of a few days, all pointing to the same idea? That wasn't coincidence. That was confirmation. The universe offering her exactly what she needed most — the reassurance that even in the middle of all that uncertainty, she was held. Things were going to be okay. When spirit wants you to know something, it keeps showing up until you stop looking away.

How to Interpret a Sign When It Appears
Pause. Before you analyze it — just notice what you felt in that first moment. Then look at the nature of the symbol. How does it live? What does it carry? And then hold it gently against your life. What are you living through right now? Where does this fit?
Your intuition is the part of you that recognizes the message. The sign is simply what gets your attention.
On the morning I had to put my beloved horse Hank down, two coyotes appeared out of nowhere and flanked him on either side as he grazed — animals that are normally nocturnal, normally solitary. Coyotes are considered to be harbingers of the afterworld. In that moment I knew it was the right time for him to go. And I knew he would not be alone on his path. It gave me peace. That is how spirit speaks — it shows you what you need, exactly when you need it.
The signs you see might offer hope or comfort. They might give you an answer, provide clarity or direction. Sometimes they validate that you are on the right path. Or they give you an indication of the outcome you can expect. And sometimes they arrive as a warning.
Often, the moment you stop overthinking and trust what you already feel — the meaning becomes very clear. Signs rarely arrive to confuse us. They arrive to bring something we already sense or need to know into clearer focus.
Signs Are Everywhere, Once You Start Looking
Signs aren't instructions. They are invitations — to pause, to wonder, and to listen more closely to what you already know.
I experienced this myself recently. While out walking my dogs one morning, a bird landed in a nearby bush — unusual, given that birds typically avoid dogs. He made sure I knew he was there. I watched him for a while, curious, then continued on. When I got home and opened my email, there was an invitation to contribute my insight for a publication on the ancient practice of reading bird behavior as divination. The bird had put me on notice, something is coming. And when the email arrived, it felt like an amusing confirmation — one of those moments that makes you smile and reminds you the universe is always communicating with you.
Sometimes signs are profound. Sometimes they're small. But they are always meaningful — and they always arrive at exactly the right moment.
